Ambadar is a contemporary revival of the rare Rahi Bandhej tradition of Tera, a village in Kutch once renowned for the extraordinary skill of its men and women in tying exceptionally fine Bandhani dots, known as Rahi ke daane jaysi Bandhej (Rahi Bandhej)

This exquisite saree is an HSJ original design, conceived from the ground up and inspired by the treasured Bandhani sarees of earlier generations, including the heirloom memories of the designers grandmother.

Hand-tied in the distinctive Rahi Bandhej manner on pure georgette, the saree features minute, closely tied dots and a traditional red ground, paired with a graceful Sargam pallu.

The composition reimagines the traditional Ambadar vocabulary through a bird’s-eye view of a living landscape, where animals, birds and vegetation come together as one continuous visual world.

Traditional motifs such as the peacock, tiger and deer are joined by newly conceived animal forms, including the camel and elephant, giving the ancient language of Bandhani a renewed contemporary expression.

The movement and natural gestures of the animals are deliberately captured within the design, creating a sense of life within the patterned landscape.

Rooted in the princely-era aesthetic of India yet simplified through a refined, contemporary eye, Ambadar seeks to preserve the finesse, intricacy and authenticity of Rahi Bandhej, a quality increasingly rare to find today.

Each piece is made as an exclusive, one-of-a-kind creation, carrying forward the craft legacy of Tera while allowing its visual language to evolve for a new generation.

Ambadar is, ultimately, a meeting of memory and imagination, an heirloom-inspired revival of a disappearing Kutch tradition.
