RAMRANDH KAMAGIRI

Kamangiri is an exquisite traditional fresco art of Kutch, once gracing the walls of its royal forts, palaces, havelis, merchant houses and traditional residences.

This contemporary work draws inspiration from the celebrated Ram-Randh frescoes of Tera Fort, an important surviving expression of Kutch’s historic mural tradition.

The Ramayana narratives at Tera were commissioned by Hamirji, the Thakur of Tera, and meticulously executed by the Kamangars, the traditional painter-artisans of Kutch.

Rendered upon lime plaster, these murals stand as a remarkable testament to the artistic, cultural and royal heritage of the region.

Today, as Kamangiri faces the passage of time and the gradual fading of its traditional practice, this work seeks to revive and carry forward its legacy.

Inspired by a scene from the original Ram-Randh frescoes, the artwork reimagines this heritage through a contemporary composition, hand-painted on pure silk.

The use of natural plant based  and mineral colours honours the traditional character of Kutch’s indigenous artistic vocabulary while allowing the art form to find new expression.

This revival is an endeavour to preserve not merely an image, but a visual language of Kutch, its stories, craftsmanship, lineage and memory.

Through contemporary art, the legacy of Kamangiri is given a renewed place in the present, ensuring that a tradition once created upon the walls of Kutch may continue to be seen, cherished and passed on to future generations.
