AJRAK
Legacy of Kutch
Ajrak is one of India’s oldest and most intricate traditions of block printing, with roots often associated with the ancient Indus Valley Civilization.
Its journey in Kutch is deeply connected to the patronage of its royal rulers, who welcomed skilled Khatri artisans from Sindh and helped establish the craft in the region, particularly in Dhamadka.
Traditionally practised using hand-carved wooden blocks, natural dyes, and a meticulous resist-printing process, Ajrak became an integral part of Kutch’s cultural identity.
Its distinctive geometric patterns, symmetrical motifs, and rich indigo blue, crimson red, black, and white reflect a profound relationship between nature, craftsmanship, and tradition.
Under royal patronage, Ajrak textiles adorned royal households while also serving the everyday needs of pastoral communities, including the Maldharis and Rabaris.
The artisans settled in Dhamadka, a village allotted to them by the royal ruler, where the Saran River provided the essential water required for their intricate printing and dyeing processes. When the Saran River eventually dried up, the artisans relocated to a new settlement, Ajrakpur, named in honour of their centuries-old tradition. Today, Ajrakhpur is renowned as a major centre of Ajrakh craftsmanship, where generations of artisan families continue to practise and preserve this remarkable heritage.
At The Palace Boutique by H.S.J Designs, we see Ajrak as more than a textile craft; it is a living legacy of Kutch’s royal heritage, artistic excellence, and cultural continuity.
Inspired by the vision of our royal ancestors and their appreciation for traditional craftsmanship, we seek to honour this legacy by bringing Ajrakh into contemporary life through thoughtfully designed products.
Our endeavour is to support the artisans who keep this tradition alive, create new opportunities for the craft, and introduce its timeless beauty to a wider audience.
Through our work, we aspire to preserve Ajrakh for future generations, ensuring that this remarkable heritage continues to evolve while remaining rooted in its origins.
For us, preserving Ajrakh is not merely about safeguarding the past; it is about carrying the legacy of Kutch forward.
