ROGAN ART
A Living Heritage of Kutch
Rogan art is a rare and centuries-old tradition of textile painting, practised by generations of Khatri artisans in Kutch, with historical roots tracing back to Persia.
The word Rogan derives from Persian, meaning oil-based. The craft uses castor oil, slowly heated until it forms a thick, elastic paste, which is blended with coloured pigments to create vibrant paints.
Using a fine, pointed metal stylus known as a kalam, artisans skilfully draw delicate, thread-like lines directly onto fabric, creating intricate patterns with a distinctive raised, almost embossed appearance.
Traditionally celebrated through motifs such as the Tree of Life, this remarkable art form is preserved today by dedicated artisan families who continue to carry its legacy forward.
At The Palace Boutique by H.S.J Designs, we seek to honour this living heritage by exploring new creative expressions of Rogan art, drawing inspiration from the natural world — its flora, fauna, botanical forms, flowers, and animal habitats.
By blending traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary design approach, we aim to expand the possibilities of this art while respecting its authenticity and origins.
Through our platform, we support Rogan artisans by showcasing their original creations, connecting their work with a wider audience, and creating opportunities for recognition and sustainable livelihoods.
Our endeavour is to help preserve this extraordinary craft for future generations, ensuring that Rogan art continues to inspire, evolve, and find a place in the modern world.
At The Palace Boutique, we believe that preserving heritage means giving tradition new life while honouring the hands that keep it alive.
